Mains et merveilles

Whether they’re steering, accompanying, fluttering about or setting the tone, hands and their splendid virtuosity can be incredibly impressive. A look at hands in a variety of performances, and their fabulous way of shaping and molding dreams.

The immensely theatrical ballet Impressing the Czar at the Opéra de Paris.

Amsterdam “Dear Stravinsky, you are truly a great artist”: with these few earnest words, Debussy sent a message of support to his Russian friend in 1915. Thus began a regular correspondence between the two composers. Daniele Gatti, chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since September, showcases this friendship with an original program featuring La Mer, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Rite of Spring, at the prestigious concert hall. The friendship of the two 20th-century giants will be rekindled through Gatti’s generous, precise conducting.

Hanoi Vietnam’s water puppet theater, which can be traced back to rain incantations and the tradition of cultivating rice paddies, is a veritable institution. It features figurines carved in fig wood, controlled from a distance by puppeteers with long rods. Traditional instruments and songs accompany scenes of daily life in the countryside. The puppets frolic in the ubiquitous water, emerging then vanishing, lending an air of enchantment. It’s unequivocally exotic, a must-see attraction.

Paris Impressing the Czar tackles the history of dance through parody, steering clear of chronological narrative. In four very different sections, William Forsythe challenges viewers while poking fun. As radical as ever, his interpretation draws on speed of movement and imbalance. Gestures are sometimes generous and sweeping, or on the contrary jerky. Steps, movements of the hands and positions of the head respond in unison. Created in 1988, the ballet has lost none of its original flamboyance.
